Foreign national women in prison

The Prison Reform Trust has published an updated report on foreign national women in prison called Still No Way Out, based on evidence gathered by Hibiscus.

Foreign national women are over-represented in the women’s prison population and despite the introduction of a defence for victims of modern slavery, there is evidence that these victims continue to be prosecuted for crimes they were forced to commit.

The report found that support for foreign national women whilst in prison, such as interpreting and immigration legal advice, varies considerably and resettlement support is generally poor.

Foreign national women are often excluded from resettlement and rehabilitation services run by the voluntary sector due to funding restrictions and barriers to statutory services.
